It was lovely practising yoga in the garden last Tuesday despite having showers of light rain. I hope this Tuesday evening will be good to us 🙂

I do sometimes tell you that is good to have goals but do avoid the danger of being so focused on this that you forget to appreciate the abundance in our lives and being grateful how far we’ve already come.

It’s been said that anxiety is caused by living in the future whereas happiness is only obtainable when we live in the present. So ideally we would be determined and motivated without attachment to the end result.

Sometimes we make the process more complicated than we need to. We will never make a journey of a thousand miles by fretting about how long it will take or how hard it will be. We make the journey by taking each day step by step and then repeating it again and again until we reach our destination.

I had a lovely visit to Hauser and Wirth garden with Anna.

Dissolving our ego can be the most difficult obstacle on our journey to enlightenment. This is a huge subject so I will only talk about the definition of ego today. Also the word ego is sometimes not understood so I will try to explain what it is. So what is the ego? Academically we can approach the definition of ego from two different schools of thought – psychological and spirituality. The Cambridge dictionary defines it as your idea or opinion of yourself, especially the feeling of your importance and ability.

Spiritually, the ego is the veil of individual personality that bars you from having a universal existence. It is because of our ego that we get the perception of separation from other beings, the universe and God. Also, this separation by ego is the root cause of all suffering in the world.

“The ego is not who you really are. The ego is your self image; your social mask; it’s the role that you are playing. Your social mask thrives on approval. It wants control, and it is sustained by power, because it lives in fear.” Deepak Chopra

The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. If used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive.

To put it more accurately, it is not so much that you use your mind wrongly, you usually don’t use it at all.

It uses you. This is the disease. You believe that you are the mind. That is the delusion. The instrument has taken over you.

I went caving with my daughter Emma, Nick and Dave to Swildon cave in Priddy yesterday. I had an amazing time and I feel so grateful to live in this beautiful part of the world and to have wonderful friends 🙂 This was a good example of how yoga can help us in every situation in our life. Without the flexibility and strength that I gained from hours spent on the yoga mat this caving excursion would have been challenging. I also find that yoga breathing always helps in stressful situations.

It is a path for us to generate happiness, understanding and love,

I really want to thank all of you for supporting our yoga classes. Helen and I really enjoy sharing and learning together with you. Yoga is so much more than an exercise class. It is about growing as human beings, learning and finding happiness and peace of mind. All this is so much more meaningful, easier and more fun with the support of friends in a yoga class 🙂

I’m so much looking forward to continuing teaching and helping you to achieve your goals in 2023 whatever they may be.

Hopefully your yoga and breathing can help you to stay focused and peaceful during the coming weeks. Stay connected within and share your light with those around.

All the best for you and your loved ones,

Berit and Helen xx

How can we learn to handle difficult emotions like anger, sadness, fear and disgust?

First of all I think it is important to understand and accept that all these emotions are natural and necessary for our survival. Even saints, priests and yogis feel these emotions! However what can be useful to understand and learn is not to identify with them. In German you say Ich habe angst which translates I have fear instead of I am scared. This means that you are experiencing fear but it is not part of who you truly are. Also in all spiritual practices we learn about impermanence which means that things will change; one minute we will feel sadness and the next minute we may feel wonder or happiness. When you meditate you can observe how thoughts and emotions come and go like clouds in the sky 🙂

Dear friends,

I always find the Remembrance Day extremely poignant and this year even more so as we have people dying in war yet again in Europe.

How do you measure your progress in yoga? Some of you may say that you measure it by how easily you can touch your toes, squat or how well you can do a sun salutation etc but let’s go beyond that and learn more about the exciting goals we can achieve.

In a sincere yoga practise you are on a path from ego to spirit. According to Vedanta, one of the key indicators of spiritual progress is that you become more joyful, lighthearted and carefree. You lose your self importance and can laugh at yourself and your self created melodramas. You become less anxious, less worried and more open to finding joy in the moment. You become less concerned about the opinions of others. I would say that you are starting to feel real freedom and liberation which is what the Hindu’s call Moksha.

Love, compassion and forgiveness become the ground state from where you live.

The day my mother died I wrote in my journal, “A serious misfortune of my life has arrived.” I suffered for more than one year after the passing away of my mother.

But one night, in the highlands of Vietnam, I was sleeping in the hut in my hermitage. I dreamed of my mother. I saw myself sitting with her, and we were having a wonderful talk. She looked young and beautiful, her hair flowing down. It was so pleasant to sit there and talk to her as if she had never died.

When I woke up it was about two in the morning, and I felt very strongly that I had never lost my mother. The impression that my mother was still with me was very clear.

I understood then that the idea of having lost my mother was just an idea. It was obvious in that moment that my mother is always alive in me.

I opened the door and went outside. The entire hillside was bathed in moonlight. It was a hill covered with tea plants, and my hut was set behind the temple halfway up. Walking slowly in the moonlight through the rows of tea plants, I noticed my mother was still with me. She was the moonlight caressing me as she had done so often, very tender, very sweet… wonderful!

Each time my feet touched the earth I knew my mother was there with me. I knew this body was not mine but a living continuation of my mother and my father and my grandparents and great-grandparents.

Of all my ancestors. Those feet that I saw as “my” feet were actually “our” feet. Together my mother and I were leaving footprints in the damp soil.

From that moment on, the idea that I had lost my mother no longer existed. All I had to do was look at the palm of my hand, feel the breeze on my face or the earth under my feet to remember that my mother is always with me, available at any time.

Namaste dear friends,

Just one week left until we can start back practising yoga together again!

Just to clarify the rules that we need to adhere to when the classes start back. We will need to keep 2 meters apart, sanitise our hands and wear face masks until we are on our mats. Obviously if you have any Covid symptoms please stay at home. The government does not stipulate a maximum number for organised indoor activities other than the two meter rule. The Wells Town hall has still decided to cap the number to six students in Parkes room. The Elim Connect centre has said maximum 12 people. This means that I will only allow pre booked and pre paid people to come to the Wells Town hall classes but allow drop ins to the Elim Connect Centre on a first come first served basis and a payment of £8 (£7 if you pay for a block of six). If you miss a class I will try to fit you in another day the same week. The cost for a six week block will be £42.

As it gets warmer I will organise more yoga classes in the garden and also some evening classes 🙂 Please let me know if you want to be added to a garden yoga mailing list as I will sometimes organise classes at short notice if the weather looks good 🙂

Classes for next week:

Tuesday: 18:00 to 19:00 yoga (Google Meet) cancelled

Thursday: 17:30 to 18:30 yoga (Google Meet)

Friday: 15:00 to 16:00 garden yoga (weather permitting)

Please let me know what classes you are interested in.

Namaste!

I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful weather and having time to meet up with friends and be out in nature.

There is no yoga next week, all classes will start back on the 2nd September and Helen Miklem has kindly agreed to continue teaching the Tuesday lunchtime classes.

It would be good to continue meeting up with whoever wants to join us for some social activities. I suggest that we meet up on Tuesday the 17th September at 14:10 at the Kitty Banks in the Market square. Let me know if you would like to meet up for a walk or maybe a garden visit as well!

I find it useful to start each day with good intentions so I find this affirmation helpful.
Just for today I will not worry
Just for today I will not anger
Just for today I will be grateful for everything I have
Just for today I will do my work honestly
Just for today I will be kind to my neighbour and all living things

Hope to see you all in September after I have come back from beautiful Findhorn in Scotland where I will be teaching a retreat next week.

Love and light,
Berit x

Namaste all yoga friends,

This summer seems to have gone in a flash – I had a very relaxing time in Sweden and Finland spending time by the sea. Nature is by far the best healer and it teaches us to go beyond the ego and realise that we are inextricably connected to the universe.

I have now benefited from practising yoga for 30 years and and I have been teaching in Wells for the last five years. It’s my pleasure to see so many people benefiting in so many ways from their yoga practise.

I have reluctantly decided I need to increase the price for classes to £7. There has been no change for 5 years now but the costs have risen in that time. However, if you attend 2 classes in the same week, the price will remain at £10.
Hannah Cox and I are planning some yoga and meditation workshops on Saturdays in the autumn but more about this in the next newsletter.

Helen Micklem will continue to teach the Tuesday lunchtime classes, Jan Evans and Lisa Reakes will cover occasional classes which I’m very grateful for.

Kind wishes from Berit

Rather, it is something that we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they’re meant to be”

Christmas Newsletter

Namaste

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for 2017 and a special thank you to Helen Micklem for all the quality teaching and help.

I’m going to Sweden this Friday so no yoga on the 15th and 18th of December but I will be back to teach both the lunchtime and evening classes on Tuesday the 19th December which will be the last day of teaching for this year.

All classes are going well with good numbers so we will continue exactly as before next year and all classes will start again on Monday the 8th of January 2018.

I always like to share my love for yoga with friends and people in the community so please find below some inspiring words about Yoga.

Spread the Light

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra teaches that the only person you can change is yourself; your practice is to create change from within by clearing your mind, connecting with your true Self, and acting from a place of wisdom. But the beauty of this seemingly “selfish” practice is that when you do your inner work, others around you, particularly those you are closest to, experience the positive effects of your work firsthand.

Our loved ones are often inspired by the positive changes they see in us to start their own yoga practice. As you continue with your practice, you can inspire others on the path of yoga, creating a community, or sangha, of support and encouragement. What better way to create positive change in the world than through your own quiet powerful example?

Yoga teacher Lisa Reakes has very kindly offered to help out and teach if Helen or I are away. I’m very grateful for her offer and you will enjoy learning from Lisa. Please find below her introduction:

I graduated from the Harmony Yoga teacher training course over three years ago. Since then I have developed my own personal practice which has enabled me to progress and grow not only in yoga but in life. Like many students, before that I attended yoga classes as an introduction.

I mainly currently teach one-to-one classes which work around my commitment to my family. However, I have taught Vinyasa Krama classes and like to include some yoga philosophy to work alongside the asana practice, pranayama and meditation so that students come to a deeper understanding of why or how we practice.

I am first and foremost a practitioner: I normally practice around three times per week and I perform a daily ritual. I also study some yoga philosophy daily. I am nourished by my practice and try to convey my enthusiasm for Vinyasa Krama yoga to my students.

Helen and I wish you all a Peaceful Christmas and looking forward to continue teaching you Yoga in 2018.

Blessings from Berit

November newsletter.

Namaste,

Firstly I would like to welcome all the new lovely people who just started this autumn. Helen and I are really enjoying teaching all the newcomers in our beginner’s class on Tuesdays. I would like to thank Helen Micklem yet again for bringing her experience and passion for yoga and sharing it with us. She will continue teaching my Tuesday lunchtime classes at the Wells Town hall.

I also like to thank Jeff Bevan for helping me with my yoga website http://www.yogainwells.uk that needed updating. We are still looking to add new photos and information.

I love meeting new people and I believe we don’t meet people by accident – they are meant to cross our path for a reason. I had the fortune of meeting Stephanie about a month ago and we just clicked straight away. She is a real entrepreneur and has some special talents that she would like to share with us! She will be offering two events that will be exclusive to my yoga students. I will of course be at both events and it also will be a nice social event to have a chance for a chat. Numbers are limited so please e-mail Steph to secure a place. Her e-mail is stephaniehiller9@yahoo.co.uk

I will finish this newsletter by a poignant yoga quote:
Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship”.
